Healing Is Sacred: A Return to Ancient Wisdom

Throughout history, healing was never divided into “physical” or “spiritual” — it was unified. In many ancient cultures, priests were also doctors, and temples served as both places of worship and centers of healing. The body, mind, and spirit were seen as one integrated whole.

In ancient Egypt, the Wab Sekhmet — purified priests devoted to the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet — served as both spiritual leaders and medical practitioners. Wab means “pure” or “purified one,” referring to their ritual cleanliness and spiritual readiness to channel healing. Sekhmet was known as the goddess of both destruction and healing — fierce in power, yet deeply associated with restoration, medicine, and divine justice.

These priest-physicians worked in temple clinics, offering a powerful blend of herbal remedies, incantations, dream therapy, and energy healing. Other healers, known as Sunu, were trained in both medicine and ritual practice, often studying sacred texts within the Per Ankh (“House of Life”), a temple library dedicated to healing knowledge. For them, illness was not just a physical imbalance — it had emotional, energetic, and spiritual roots.

The Greeks, too, honored this holistic approach. At the temples of Asclepius, the god of healing, people underwent purification rituals, sacred fasting, and received treatments that addressed body, soul, and mind. And in indigenous traditions across the world — from shamans in South America to medicine men and women in North America — healing has always included spiritual insight, emotional release, and physical detox.

It’s only in recent centuries, with the rise of modern Western medicine, that this connection has been severed. But ancient wisdom reminds us: true healing addresses the whole person.
